All Things Aspie

Where do you fall on the spectrum?

Autism “light”

What exactly is Asperger Syndrome? Is it autism? Well, the short answer is “no.” It is very different than Classic Autism.  Since it has been recognized as an actual neurological condition (1994), it has been categorized along with a whole spectrum of neurological conditions, which is now known as the Autism Spectrum, and Asperger Syndrome is considered an Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD.

But seriously, folks, I’ve got to be honest with you and say I loathe the term “disorder.”  It is thinly veiled along the same lines as the words “disease,” “disability,” “sufferers,” etc, etc, ad nauseum. This collection of negative words implies that someone on this spectrum is in some way broken and needs to be fixed or “cured,” or is not normal, acceptable, or has much worth. This mentality is damaging at best and dangerous at worst.

This is not to say that AS is not a challenge, whether it be affecting a child or an adult. It IS a challenge to get through each day. However, every single human being since the beginning of time has had to deal with challenges. Welcome to Planet Earth. It is from this perspective that we must stop labeling these conditions and these people in a negative way.

Asperger Syndrome is not the horror that the mainstream population thinks it is. In fact, it is certainly interesting. Let’s try to have some fun with this and stop using it as a crutch to avoid the self-improvement needed to be happy.
